Equipment approval also matters.

Manitoba requires grain dryers to carry appropriate certification, field approval, or special acceptance. Previously owned or modified dryers can require additional assessment if their original electrical or fuel systems have been altered.

Manitoba Hydro specifically identifies grain augers among the types of farm equipment that most often contact overhead lines. Its current guidance calls for maintaining at least 3 meters (10 feet) between farm equipment and overhead power lines. Equipment exceeding 4.8 meters (15.9 feet) may also require a farm equipment clearance permit in applicable situations.

Manitoba Hydro also recommends planning traffic movement so equipment does not travel beneath overhead power lines when new bins are being located.

That is worth considering before deciding where bins, dryers, and grain-handling routes will go, not after everything has already been installed.


Don’t Wait Until Harvest to Find a Problem

The worst time to discover that your electrical service can’t support new equipment is when the dryer, fans, and augers need to run.

Before peak season, ask:

  • Did we add new bins?
  • Did we install larger fans?
  • Is there another auger?
  • Are we commissioning a new dryer?
  • Has other large electrical equipment been added?
  • Have breakers or electrical equipment been causing problems?

Manitoba Electrical Permits and Inspections

New agricultural electrical installations and changes to existing systems may require permits and inspections.

Manitoba Hydro requires an electrical permit before applicable electrical work begins outside Winnipeg, including the installation, alteration, repair, or extension of electrical equipment. Electrical wiring must also comply with the current Manitoba Electrical Code and be inspected for compliance.
